Third Test-playing tour of Pakistan by South Africa

(September - October 2007)

South Africa returned to Pakistan for the first time since their 2003-04 tour was almost called off after a bomb explosion in an office block rocked Karachi days before they arrived. For this tour a two-man delegation from South Africa (Goolam Raja and Sean Gallagher) inspected the security arrangements and found them sufficiently strong to play in Karachi. But the South Africans expressed concerns over playing in Peshawar, in the North-West Frontier Province and asked for a revision in the itinerary. In addition to the fourteen players there were 13 officials including three security personnel.

When Jacques Kallis was dumped from the World T20 championships squad he quit the vice-captaincy and said he was considering his future but after discussions with Cricket South Africa chief executive, Gerald Majola, he agreed to tour.

Dr Logan Naidoo served as Proteas team manager in a caretaker capacity for a year from September 2007.

Grant Compton was the new fitness trainer. Adrian le Roux resigned after the tournament, saying he wanted to spend less time travelling but noting in a controversial report that some players were not responsible enough with regard to drinking alcohol before matches.

Jaques Kallis resigned the vice-captaincy after being left out of the Proteas’ squad for the ICC World 20/20 tournament in South Africa. On 1 October Ashwell Prince was appointed the new Test vice captain after a team meeting at their hotel base.

Fourteen players, ten officials and three security specialists left for Pakistan on Tuesday night 25 September

They arrived in Karachi on Wednesday 26 September 2007 for the five week tour. Members of Pakistan's special forces, armed with AK-47's, escorted the team from the Jinnah International Airport to their hotel.

They had a two-hour practice session scheduled at the NBP Sports Complex prior to their sole warm-up match but cancelled it because of tiredness.
