The I.C.C. World Cup cause a pleasant surprise as the New Zealanders progressed into the Super Six round (which hosts England were unable to do) and reached the semi-final.

New Zealand went one down in the Test series that followed by failing to capitalise on a 100-run lead on first innings. Then the newly-styled ‘Black Caps’ turned the summer round. Every member of the team contributed well but the accuracy of fast bowling pair Cairns and Nash, fronting up because Doull and Allott were injured, had a decisive effect.

The nine-wicket victory at Lord’s was their first win in thirteen Tests played at the home of cricket and only their third on English soil after winning in 1983 (at Headingley) and 1986 (Trent Bridge). Winning again at The Oval, this became the second time New Zealand has beaten England in a Test series on English soil. The first occasion was in 1986.

Hundreds of English spectators gathered in front of Kennington Oval pavilion, booing and chanting as Nasser Hussain collected the losers’ cheque from sponsors Cornhill Insurance.

Highlights

- At Old Trafford Nathan Astle (101) and Matthew Bell (83) buried England in a partnership of 153.

- Craig McMillan added to this with 107* and New Zealand declared on 496 for 9.

- Shortly after taking a five-wicket haul (5-31)at The Oval, Cairns joined New Zealand's second innings at 39 for six, and struck 80 runs from 94 deliveries. He later took the final wicket to clinch an 83-run victory.

Return to New Zealand

The end of the World Cup campaign saw Gavin Larsen, Carl Bulfin and Matthew Hart return to New Zealand

The main team arrived back in New Zealand on Thurdsay 26 August and were met at Christchurch Airport by Walter Hadlee. After only four weeks at home they would depart again for a tour of India.

For New Zealand the tour brought an end to the three-year terms of Steve Rixon - the first foreigner to coach the national team - and manager John Graham. New coach David Trist and manager Jeff Crowe took over.
