56th Test tour
Second
Test-playing tour of Sri Lanka by Australia
(August -
September 1992)
|
The Australians were the
first Test side to visit Sri Lanka since a bomb caused the abandonment of New
Zealand's tour in April 1987. The
tour was confirmed after a visit by Mr David Richards, Chief Executive of
the Australian Board.
Changes were made to the
team after Australia failed to reach the semi-final stages of the World
Cup. Out went vice-captain Geoff Marsh, Merv
Hughes, Steve Waugh, Peter Taylor (who announced his retirement) and Bruce
Reid.
Sri Lanka threw away the
First Test, having been 76 without loss, chasing 181 for victory, and
handed Australia a scarcely deserved victory.
It was the first Australian
Test series win on the Indian sub-continent since Lawry's side beat India
in 1969-70. Although the Australians won, Border conceded that his side had
problems and that a few places in the team remained up for grabs
Sri Lanka gained some solace
from a win in the one-day series.
