India's 29th Test tour
Fourth Test-playing tour of
New Zealand by India
(January - March
1990)
|
After the tour of
Pakistan, the chairman of selectors Raj Singh Dungarpur
asked Mohammad Azharuddin to take on the
captaincy which he retained for the next six and a half years.
Until now there was
usually one manager on tour, often with a Test cricket background, but the
Indian Board decided that in future there would two managers with separate
responsibilities for administration and for cricket. However, Bedi’s reign as India’s first ‘cricket manager’ or
coach was brief. His uncompromising approach became renowned after making
furious threats to throw members of the team out of the plane into the sea
(!) after losing to New Zealand, and after eight months he was replaced.
