54th Test tour
Sixth
Test-playing tour of New Zealand by Australia
(March 1990)
|
This tour reciprocated the
one-off Test match at Perth earlier in the season with a Test match played
in Wellington for the trans-Tasman Trophy. Once Hadlee
had bowled out the Australians for 110 in the first innings, they were
unable to catch up so New Zealand won its sixth and biggest victory over
Australia.
The one-day 'tri-series'
for the Rothman's Cup preceding the Test match was the last time in New
Zealand sport that a tobacco company was allowed to sponsor a cricket
event. In this series Australia had
performed much better and won the final against New Zealand
Dr
Cam Battersby, later awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for his work
in medical research, was on the first of his four tours as manager of an
Australian team. He was a member of the Australian Cricket Board from 1987
to 2002. The Board decided in 1997 to have a permanent team manager
removing the opportunity for Board members to become closely acquainted
with players and to understand playing circumstances on tours.
