27th official Test tour
Twelfth Test-playing tour by West
Indies to England
(May - August 1984)
|
The West Indians became the first
touring team in England to achieve a five-nil clean sweep (soon called a
'blackwash') in a full Test series.
The success belonged to the fast bowlers. Allan Lamb alone resisted
them successfully, and serious injuries were suffered by Andy Lloyd and
Paul Terry in facing fast, short-pitched deliveries. The over rate was very
slow but the West Indies Board rejected an English TCCB proposal that 96
overs should be bowled in each Test day's play.
The tourists also possessed batting in
depth.

described banning those players as 'a blessing in disguise', allowing one
or two fine, younger players to become established earlier than they
otherwise might.
Tour Party Announced : 13 April 1984.
Not selected :
Ralston Otto (Antigua), 26, who scored the
highest run aggregate (572) since the Shell Shield's inception in 1966
