28th official Test tour
Eighth Test-playing tour by West
Indies to Australia
(October 1984 -
March 1985)
|
This was the eighth official West
indies Test tour of Australia. It was in fact the fourth visit to Australia
in six years but the first full tour since taking a 5-1 defeat in 1975-76.
In order to take on the role of
manager, Wesley Hall had to resign his job of ten years with Banks Brewery,
who refused him five months unpaid leave after granting a similar period
for the 1983-84 tour of India. Hall
was awarded The Order of Australia for services to cricket. During the tour
he suffered a neck injury and on 28 November had to be taken to hospital
for treatment. The physio/trainer
Dennis Waight also needed hospital treatment
during the tour for chest pains.
Desmond Haynes was reprimanded for
giving a V-sign to Geoff Lawson who had just bowled him out in the second
Test match.
Clive Lloyd, 40, on his farewell tour,
concluded his captaincy reign with a defeat at Sydney but not before the West Indies had
completed eleven consecutive Test match victories, which had never been
achieved before.
